Frequently asked questions asked about C.B.T.
Do you see everybody who wants to pay for CBT?
Unfortunately I do not work with everyone one who contacts me. This may be due to various reasons. However, if I do decide that we can not work together this will be based upon my professional judgement and not a personal opinion of you. _________________________
Do you do home visits?
In some cases I will offer home visits but please do not be offended if I ask for various details about your home location and details of other people who may be in the house when I visit you.
In some cases I may have to charge travel expenses . _________________________
Can it cure all my problems?
As already mentioned C.B.T can be effective for a large variety of mental health problems. It is often referred to as the 'treatment of choice'. However , it can not cure everything ! _________________________
Does the client just talk about their problems and the therapist just listens to them ?
Although the client will be given ample opportunities to express how they feel, C.B.T involves more than just the client talking about their problems. Rather the emphasis is upon discovering ways in which the client can change and improve the quality of their psychological or emotional life. _________________________
Is having therapy like being told what I should and shouldn't do in my life ?
Having therapy isn't about being scutinised by an 'all knowing expert'. Rather the emphasis for the sessions should be about you and your therapist working together in a collaborative manner. _________________________
Does the therapist do all the work and I just get better by attending ?
No, the client will certainly be expected to do more than just attend sessions. If therapy is to be succesful the relationship between therapist and client should be collaborative. In other words the therapist guides the client and helps to facilitate therapy, but the client still has to have input into therapy . _________________________
Is C.B.T just common sense ?
Although C.B.T can seem to involve a lot of common sense, it involves far more than this if it's delivered as an effective psychotherapy. _________________________
Is there anything expected from the client?
Yes. Firstly to attend sessions when they have been arranged, and if possible give reasonable notice (24hrs) for cancellation of sessions. Also clients will be expected to take part in various homework assignments. _________________________
Cognitive therapy is not:
* Positive thinking. * Suggesting negative thoughts cause negative emotions. * Simple and basic. * Cognitive therapy does not ignore the client's past. * Always an alternative to medication. * Cognitive therapy is not a collection of different techniques. * Cognitive therapy is not just for mild mental health problems, it can also be used in complex mental health presentations as well.
